Beetroot also known as beets is one of the most versatile and tasty vegetable that could be found these days. Known by different names, but is omnipresent; it is found in almost 70% of countries with its popularity in medicinal purposes dug deep since ancient times. Beetroot lost its identity in last few decades, but, it is again gaining the popularity it deserves. It has bounced back as a famous veggie for salad, found in almost all the lavish tables headed for royal dinners. It tastes sweet and earthy and is a whole lot of crunch. It is also used in preparing dishes, while many people prefer it in the form of juice, believing it the best way to reap maximum benefits out of it.

It could be found in different colors across the world. Somewhere it comes as white, while at other places in orange-yellow and red. The unique crimson-red color of red beet is due to betalain pigments, such as betanin and betacyanin while yellow varieties are rich in ß-xanthin pigment. Rest of the nutrient content is same in all three varieties.

 

Beets are rich in vitamins, minerals, and organic compounds. They contain vitamin A, vitamin B6 and vitamin C along with, minerals like magnesium, iron, copper, potassium and phosphorus. Not just this, beets is also an excellent source of soluble fiber, folic acid and antioxidants like carotenoids, zeaxanthin, glycine, and betanin. Beets are also very low in calories and are rich in sugar content.

The best part about beets is that when mixed with other fruits such as carrot, orange or any other vegetable of fruit it becomes more beneficial and multiplies the nutrient of other fruit also. That’s why in many parts of world it is considered important to add a few pieces of beet in any fruit, specially carrot.

If you take a glass of juice of beet root in afternoon every day, then it will help lowering the blood pressure. Actually what happens is, beets are rich in nitrates. These nitrates breakdown to form nitrous oxide which in turn helps in expanding the blood vessels to accommodate more blood and thus eases the pressure on your heart. Thus, maintains the blood pressure and more blood is transported to each organ.

Beetroot contains large amount of soluble fibres, flavonoids and betacyanin which are perfect material for not just controlling bad or LDL cholesterol but also for promoting the growth of good or HDL cholesterol. Betacyanin is a powerful antioxidant. It helps reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol and does not allow it to deposit on the walls of the artery.
