Physical health affects the mind and vice – versa. Which of the two is the more important is like asking the age – old question : what comes first , the chicken or the egg. For our present subject, let us be clear that a sound mind in a sound body are prerequisites for high efficiency and good quality work in the office, factory or field, which lead to a sense of achievement and fulfillment.
Health refers to the absence of any form of illness and is the well-being state. The definition can mean so many things, depending on the perspective from which it is looked at. However, the key element in it is that when something is said to be healthy, there must be well-being, and there should be no sign of illness. In the context of organizations, healthy and safe organizations are those that do not harm employees in any way; and are free from illness. The presence of health in such organizations is demonstrated by the capability of growth that those organizations have; in addition to, the ability of the organization to adapt to different challenges.
Eight hours in a chair in front of a computer, five days a week can take atoll on our body. From avoiding eye strain and tension neck syndrometo passing on those extra calories that co-workers leave invitingly on their desks, some steps need to be taken that will help us stay healthy at work. No wonder then that companies everywhere have a stake in the health and fitness of their employees and are willing to spend considerable money towards this purpose. Japanese companies particularly excel in this and the more successful among them start off the day with a body bending and stretching session and even singing the company song designed to promote loyalty and motivation among the workforce! This is considered an important factor contributing to high productivity and quality. Here is a lesson which has been emulated elsewhere in the world and could work wonders in India. It is estimated that some 20,000 American firms established in-house health clubs. typical of these is the soft drink manufacturer, Pepsi Cola which has spent about $2 million in setting up a health club at its head office in New York State. Such expenditure has proved to be wise investment in achieving better efficiency and higher productivity. It has indirectly, also helped reduce the premium on health insurance of its staff. This business has grown so large so that hundreds of consultancies have sprung up for the management of health clubs and fitness centers. In some cases there is a nominal contribution by the employees on the premise that they will value and use facilities all the more. Some insurance companies have teamed up with employees in such ventures as better health contributes to a longer life and hence more premium! Though many firms in India have generous medical schemes, the movement towards health clubs and the like is yet to gain momentum .
These are organisation’s efforts, there are several simple and easy ways, that people can do to make their workplace healthier. One should try to keep moving, sitting at the same place for more than 2 hours can cause muscular pains, so one should move in intervals of 1 -2 hours. Secondly, our posture while working should be proper. One should sit with legs flexed at a 90 degree angle with feet resting comfortably on floor. It is important to maintain balance between stretching and strengthening muscles. Drinking lots of water can avoid dehydration and eating healthy snacks after every 4 -5 hours help us to maintain good health. The most common thing which is seen, now a days, is that people are comprising with sleep in the race of putting extra hours for work. But they forget that 6 – 8 hours is necessary for our body. In 24 hours, can’t we manage just 6 hours for our body? Skipping breakfasts, lunch, sleep can give few more hours towards work for now, but will make us inefficient in the long run. So, one should spend some time for health to live a successful life.
Following the simple motto : “ Health is Wealth “
One can sustain a happy and successful life. If we have sound mind and body we can surely give our best in all the other spheres.
