Generally speaking, headaches are your body’s response to physical or emotional stress. That stress can make the muscles in your head and neck contract to create tension headaches. Or it can make blood vessels constrict and later expand to produce migraines or vascular headaches.

Headaches, including migraines, are extremely common. Because headaches can stem from a variety of causes, some headache sufferers seek treatment on a near-daily basis.   1. Ginger:

Ginger is a home remedy for instant relief. It helps reduce inflammation of the blood vessels in the head, hence easing the pain. And since it stimulates digestion, it also helps quell the nausea which occurs during migraines.

One can easily take it one way or other; either you can mix equal parts of ginger juice and lemon juice. Consume it once or twice a day. Or you can also boil ginger powder or raw ginger in water, and inhale the vapor. And if you don’t want to consume ginger you can also apply a paste of ginger powder and 2 tablespoons water on your forehead for a few minutes to provide quicker relief.

 

  1. Mint Juice:

Menthol and menthol are the primary components of mint which are very effective in alleviating headaches.

Extract mint juice from a handful of mint leaves and apply it on forehead and temples to treat headache. You can also place mint tea compresses on the forehead to relieve discomfort. Along with mint juice, coriander juice is also effective in treating headaches.

Aromatherapy preparations vary considerably, but some of the more commonly used essential oils for headache treatment include lavender and peppermint. Use for neck massaging, in a bath, or to inhale.

With its refreshing scent, peppermint/ lavender helps open up clogged blood vessels which cause headache. They contain menthol which helps regulate blood flow in the body. Quietly breathe in the aroma in a cool, dark room. Or another option is to mix two or three drops in one tablespoon of almond oil or olive oil and massage your forehead with it. You can even draw a foot bath of lavender oil and peppermint, since the hot water draws blood to your feet and the aroma relaxes you.

Note: Do not take lavender oil orally.

Basil, the strong-scented herb used as a topping for pizzas and pastas, certainly tastes and smells good. And for people in need of a natural headache treatment, the oil derived from basil plants can also be a useful home remedy. Basil works as a muscle relaxant, so it is especially helpful for headaches caused by tension and tight muscles.

Put three or four fresh basil leaves in a cup of boiling water and let it simmer for a few minutes. Optionally, add a little honey and then sip the tea slowly. Or you can also boil one tablespoon of basil leaves or a few drops of basil oil to a pot of boiling water and carefully lean over the pot to take in the steam.

 

  1. Chamomile Tea:

Chamomile tea has compounds that help ease pain and relax you. Brew up a cup using one chamomile tea bag to a cup of just-boiled water. Allow to steep, covered, for 10 minutes. Sweeten with honey, if desired. Take a few minutes to sip the hot tea slowly while sitting in a quiet spot.

The cold from ice helps reduce inflammation that contributes to headaches. Plus, it has a numbing effect on the pain.

Applying an ice pack to the back of your neck can give you relief from a migraine/headache. Oryou can also place a washcloth dipped in ice-cold water over your head for five minutes. Repeat the process several times.

Cloves can be used to ease a throbbing headache due to its cooling and pain-relieving properties. Crush a few cloves gently and put them in a sachet or a clean handkerchief. Inhale the smell of the crushed cloves whenever you have a headache until you get some relief from the pain. You can also put 2 drops of clove oil in a tablespoon of coconut oil plus sea salt and gently massage your forehead and temples with it.

Both apples and apple cider vinegar can be used to fight off a headache. They help restore the acid-alkaline balance in the body.

Mix half cup of apple cider vinegar with half cup of water and boil the mixture in a covered saucepan. Remove from heat, hold a towel over your head and slowly inhale the steam. This will provide instant relief from sinus headaches.

If you wake up with a headache, just eat a piece of apple sprinkled with salt, and drink some warm water after. Or add 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to a glass of water, with honey and a splash of lemon juice. Drink it 2 or 3 times a day.

A few simple exercises to stretch your head and neck can help reduce the intensity of the headache. Move your chin upwards and downwards, left and right, and bend your neck sideways towards each shoulder.
