Hair fall… the most common problem you would have seen around you or might have experienced. Anyone can experience hair loss – men, women and children, though it is generally seen to worsen with advancing age. It is generally said that males suffer more with the problem of hair fall as compared to females. Certain statistics state that almost 30% of people experience hair loss by 30 years of age and almost 50% get hair loss by the time they turn 50.
If you would have ever consult a dermatologist, then you must have heard that “losing 50-100 strands of hair a day is normal”… really?? i mean I can’t bear the loss of a single strand of hair and they are talking about 100.
Before starting efforts to treat hair fall it is necessary to find the actual reason for this hair fall happening and once the reason has been found there are some natural treatments available that is sure to work against hair loss. The reason for hair loss could be one amongst these:
- Hair treatments and styling:
Hair treatments with hot oils or irons, and perming, coloring, bleaching, or straightening, will weaken your hair and cause it to break off.
If you are going bald, and your parents and grandparents haven’t had great coverage either, chances are your hair loss is genetic. The culprit hormone behind most hair loss (DHT) is produced in different quantities by different people, and hair follicles seem to have different susceptibilities to the effects of this hormone – these differences are programmed into our genes.
- Disruption of hair growth cycle:
Life stresses like pregnancy, surgery, or severe illness can lead to hair loss. The hair stop growing at the time of stress and in other events like in pregnancy, mother undergoes many hormonal changes that may lead to hair fall.
- Skin disease:
Some skin diseases like ringworm and psoriasis, when they affect the scalp, can cause hair fall. The hair fall usually stops once thedisease is controlled.
- Other diseases:
Sometimes hair fall can be a symptom of an underlying disease like diabetes, lupus, or polycystic ovaries. If you have thyroid disease – whether your thyroid is overactive or underactive – you will have poor quality hair that falls easily.
Hair fall can also be a sign of nutritional deficiencies. Iron deficiency can cause hair fall, and people whose diet does not have enough protein and calcium will also lose hair.
- Side effect of drugs:
Most people know that severe hair fall (that may sometimes even lead to baldness) is a side effect of chemotherapy drugs for cancer. But what most people do not know is that medicines for depression, bipolar disorder, and acne can also cause hair loss. Any medicine containing amphetamines – often prescribed for Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorders and also present in diet pills – can cause your hair to fall.
- Lifestyle changes:
Sudden change in the location where you live can also be a cause of hair fall. Because change in location means change in water and water of different locations has different quantity of salts mixed in it. And the place you were living in before, your body was used to that water now sudden change in water may cause hair fall but once your body develops adaptability to the place your hair fall may stop.
If you can clearly pinpoint the reason why you are losing hair, choosing the right treatment course becomes a lot easier. Accordingly, you can introduce desirable lifestyle or fashion changes and if required, consult a doctor.
